What is the difference between an Alternator and AC Generator In Nigeria?

Nigeria’s Power Supply Drops 70%

Owner supplied to Nigerian homes dropped from 9.6 to 9.2 hours daily, according to a report released by Solarity.   The report observed that over N5 trillion has been invested into providing electricity for Nigerians in the last 20 years but darkness still continues to increase. “What is more worrying in the power conundrum is that the more money is expended in the sector, the darker the country becomes as regards to the power supply. “For instance, Nigeria has expended an estimated sum of N5tn ($31.45bn) in the last 20 years to generate power. However, only a maximum of about 5,074 megawatts of electricity could be generated within this period, which is still grossly inadequate and derisory,” the report said. According to the research, the peak sustained period of power supply enjoyed by Nigerians in Q2 2019 was 9.4 hours in June. While in Q1, it was 10.2 hours in January 2019. Vanpeux attributed the drop in supply in Q2 to the increasing incidence of grid failures. The report noted that Nigeria needs at list 30,000mw to keep its populace away from darkness. It said, “This detrimental and undesirable event highlights a major challenge in the power sector which needs urgent attention due to its devastating effects on the country’s economy. “It must also be stated that for a country of approximately 200 million Nigerians, a minimum of 30,000 megawatts of electricity needs to be generated. It is against this backdrop that Vanpeux conducted its quarterly power poll to assess electricity distribution to Nigerian households in the second quarter of 2019.” Punch reports the research as saying that 37 percent of the respondents who were polled by the survey in Q1 said they have had an improved supply of power. This percentage dropped to 31 in Q2. However, there was an increase in the number of people reporting improved power supply from 28 percent in April 2019 to 36 percent in June 2019. Between January and June 2019, the national grid has collapsed eight times. It failed five times in January alone. The PUNCH has learned that the power supply would decrease by 50 megawatts on Wednesday. In a statement released on Monday, The Transmission Company of Nigeria explained that the decrease will be brought on by yearly “preventive maintenance” on the line bay at the Lekki Transmission Substation in Lagos. The electricity supply to Lekki phase 1, Oniru, Elegushi, Waterfront, Igbo Efon, and Twenty-first Century Estate in Lagos state will be disrupted by around 50MW during the maintenance period. The statement read, “TCN regrets any trouble this may give electricity consumers in the impacted area.” The declaration followed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s pledge to start providing Nigerians with at least 5000MW of electricity on July 1. According to data from the Nigerian Electricity System Operator, NESO, checks by The PUNCH revealed that the peak generation as of 3:24 PM on Monday was 3, 967MW, while the lowest generation was 3, 539MW. The NERC had to act in response to a large-scale public outcry after the electrical grid consistently collapsed, with more than four incidents so far this year.   The new electricity tariff! What are the implications for consumers? As the regime takes effect from April 1, Akinola AJIBADE examines its implications for consumers. In April 1, the new electricity tariff regime would take off. Under it, consumers, including individuals and corporate organizations, would pay more for energy. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in January announced the new tariff regime amid anxieties and huge expectations from Nigerians. Notable is the effectiveness of the tariffs. Many consumers do not pay cost-effective tariffs; a reason the government introduced the new regime. Earlier, NERC said it would implement the tariffs in phases, to ensure the payment is flexible. Stakeholders have expressed mixed feelings on the issue. While some believe that the cost of accessing electricity is high and that the Federal Government’s decision to continue to subsidize the cost of electricity till 2021, cannot lessen the pains of average users of energy until supply is stable, others do not. They backed the government’s decision to increase the tariffs. To them, the government is on the path of rejiging the sector by returning it to optimal productivity. One of the three key stakeholders in the energy value chain is the 11 power distribution companies (DisCos), which issue electricity bills and in return collect money from customers. Painfully, the money is not paid promptly due to irregular supply of power. The Director, Research and Advocacy, Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), Mr. Sunday Oduntan, said the supply of electricity would improve as soon as there is increased revenue from the tariffs. He said: “While I understand the frustrations of Nigerians that they are not getting enough supply of electricity, it is pertinent to say that the poor funding of the sector, in recent times, caused the problem. For the sector to be efficiently run, the price of electricity must increase. That is what the government has done by trying to implement new electricity tariffs on April 1, this year. Nigeria cannot have electricity if those in government refuse to sit down, examine issues affecting the sector, and proffering solution. We must realize that the cost of production of electricity determines its price.” He said the only way the country could mitigate the rising cost of electricity is to make money available to the operators and that is what the government has done by putting in place cost-effective tariffs.The Chief Executive officer, Meter Electricity Manufacturers Company Nigeria Limited (MEMCOL), Mr. Kola Balogun, said liquidity is the bane of the sector, adding that consumers lacked the cash to pay for the rising cost of electricity.   He said the government is subsidizing the sector by providing intervention funds to the operators, adding that it cannot continue to fund the sector when it has other responsibilities unattended to. The sector, he said, would have enough money for operation if the tariffs are well implemented.
